RIBA Insight Monthly Briefing

What do specifiers want from product manufacturers?

What do specifiers want from product manufacturers? RIBA Insight has launched an informative research report detailing who specifiers are, the projects they’re working on, and what they want from product manufacturers.

The free report, available now is a must-read for individuals, companies and organisations wishing to gain an awareness of specifiers’ needs, current trends in specifications and future market predictions.

RIBA Insight chose 500 people across assorted sectors and professions (not just architects and users of NBS specification tools) to take part in the survey so that we were able to gather the most dynamic set of responses from a significant, representative sample of specifiers. The research report is the first in what will become a series of valuable documents – and we are already actively seeking suggestions for the next prospective research subjects.

Here are just some of the questions you can expect to have the answers to, once you’ve downloaded your free copy of the report:

Which facts will shape specification in the future?

The vast majority of specifiers believe in producing specifications digitally and 73% of respondents disagreed with the statement that specifications: “won’t be important, because it will be visual information that matters”. But the range of specifications they needed, and who produces them, is changing. Almost 70% of specifiers need to produce proprietary specifications by product brand. This diverse range of specification models suggests that a tool for capturing information (without the need for re-working) in order to provide effective management throughout a project will be required digitally – collaborating as part of a project team community.

How will the Internet and digital advancements affect specifications?

Over 60% of specifiers are currently looking for BIM objects on manufacturer’s websites. Although hard copy brochures and directories are significant sources of product information and should not be disregarded when it comes to marketing communications - websites are vital for attracting the right visitors. Displaying the right information on websites can make all the difference when specifiers are choosing between products.

At the forefront of innovative specification research, RIBA Insight aims to help manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and legal professionals communicate effectively and build trusted relationships with architects, and a wide range of construction professionals.

We hope that this report will provide you with the tools you need to better understand specifiers’ needs and emerging trends in specification research and production – so that you stay at the top of your game.
